Beeston Castle

This was built in 1225 by the Earl of Chester, but was soon seized by Henry III. It was used by him and his son Edward I in their campaigns against the native Welsh. The well is hundreds of feet deep. The castle was eventually to be a victim of the Civil War, being largely destroyed in 1646 by the Parliamentary forces. Now owned and cared for by English Heritage, it makes a great visit, but be warned! - the climb to the top is quite steep. Beeston Castle is an English Heritage property.

Peckforton Castle

Peckforton Castle looks mediaeval, but in fact it was built as a grand folly in the mid-1800's! Nowadays it is a large luxury hotel, and is very popular for weddings - if you are due to attend a wedding at Peckforton, but would like to stay somewhere a little quieter, Fernlea Lodge is ideal. We're only 10-15 minutes' drive away, on quiet backroads - no danger of a traffic delay!

Cheshire Ice Cream Farm

Just the other side of Tattenhall from Fernlea Cottage, the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm is the place to go for... well, ice cream! But there's more to it than just lovely dairy ice cream - there's a tea room, farm shop and gift shop, too. And you can even watch the cows being milked!

Cheshire Candle Factory

Set high up in the Peckforton Hills with a magnificent view across the Cheshire Plain, the Cheshire Candle Factory is fun to visit. You can have a go at making your own candles, as well as browse their gift shop.
